Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite game series is Doom, with its fast-paced, arcade-like gameplay and moddibility. One of my favorite Doom mods is SGT_Mark_IV's Brutal Doom. While I'm partial to Project Brutality and Brutal Doom 64, BD has its fun without a doubt. And with the mods it's inspired (Insanity's Brutality, Brutal Guncaster) and its submod Brutal Doom 64, Sarge has made quite an impression over the years, both good and bad. BD is exactly what it sounds like: take Doom and make it fucking brutal. New dismemberment mechanics, over-the-top gore settings, and a new arsenal accompany the Doomguy through Hell, and v21 only makes it better. New weapons include the AA12 automatic shotgun, sub-machinegun, and BFG (Big Fucking Gun) 10,000, but there's also the railgun (which is like a plasma sniper rifle). Of all the weapons, my favorite is probably the railgun simply because it's so devastating and so fun to shoot. And if you're playing on Ultra-Violence, which you should be, BDv21 offers plenty of challenge. That's not to mention the new map enhancement, which can either add decorations to some maps or just give it a complete makeover (unfortunately, this doesn't seem to improve my already-negative opinion of Doom II). My only gripe with BDv21 is the random spawns. I wish there was a progression-based weapon spawning mechanic, because there are plenty of times where I pick up the AA12 when I wanted the Super Shotgun. All in all, though, v21 is possibly one of the best FPS (technically, I guess?) out there, and it's a goddamn mod to a 20-year-old game. That's really sad when you consider all the AAA crap that's come out over the past couple of years (I'm looking at you, CoD and Wolfenstein II). If you haven't already played through Ultimate Doom or Doom II with BD, I highly suggest you do so. All you need is the Doom or Doom II WAD files, which you can get on Steam or GOG for dirt cheap (about $5 USD), the mod itself, and a source port like GZDoom or Zandronum.
